Gender Reveal

We decided we'd like to do a gender reveal party for our baby bump.

Part of us worried it was is getting carried away with everything but part of us wanted to mark the occasion and celebrate all the little milestones. You don't know how long you have to enjoy something before it is gone, so we wanted to make the most of it. We also thought it would make things exciting for the family to be involved in a little get together to announce the gender.

We started planning a good few weeks even before we'd had the scan.

I researched online for ideas, looked at party supplies and games and other options.

We ended up buying the party supplies from The Range. There was a pink and blue theme in one of their selections and that seemed perfect for what we needed.
We bought plates, cups, serviettes and decorations.
The decorations were simple to put up - pink and blue fans, paper lanterns, tassel bunting. It was quick and easy but effective.

I made a pink and blue themed wreath from a wire wreath I bought at Christmas. I wrapped it in yarn and hot glued on buttons in flower patterns and added a glittery Hessian bow.

A few things were waiting on the actual scan before we ordered them. So after we found out the sex and I had returned to work I ordered a buffet from Menai Deli Sandwich Bar. I knew it'd be too much to prepare all the food so I had to order in.

I created favour boxes with little thoughtful gifts in them as well.
We had a little card explaining all the gifts:

I then ordered these confetti canons in their appropriate colour - pink!
Typically, the confetti canons didn't arrive when they said they would. They claimed delivery for the 29th or 30th at the latest. Nope.
I had to bake a cake to do the reveal. I made a gluten-free Victoria sponge (gf because Caz's step-dad is coeliac). I sliced each sponge in half and cut out a square well to get in the most buttercream but that did affect the structure of the cake. Well, that and the heat. It all wanted to ooze out and the layers wished to slide around. It just about held together though.
What was funny was no one suspected that the cake would be the gender reveal. It was just sat there in plain sight on the breakfast bar on a cake stand and no one thought 'I wonder if that would be the gender reveal'! Good plan!

What was really stressful though was getting people to RSVP. I understand life can be busy and uncertain but when you need to know numbers to order the food for you start to get agitated!

I found the games on http://blog.partydelights.co.uk/. I searched baby shower or gender reveal and it came up with lots of ideas and quite a few downloads.
The games and other things we played were:
Baby Predictions
Baby Shower Bingo
Playdough Babies
Nursery Rhyme Quiz
Wishes for Baby
Bunny Baby Shower Guest Book
It all worked out remarkably well. We had prizes for the bingo, playdough and nursery rhyme games and will get a bottle of something for the person who is closest in the baby predictions. We had thought everything through! All prepared! Caz even managed to theme the prizes - a bottle of rose wine, Roses chocolate and rose and tea flavour shortbread biscuits! All pink themed! Clever! I didn't notice that until my Dad pointed it out!

The food was collected by Caz while I battled with icing cakes!

We started by eating food and having various drinks. We brought in a selection of drinks from cordials, tonic and soda water, iced lemon water, J2Os and a few other options.
Seeming we had food for 11, the 9 of us worked our way through most of it. There were sandwiches with various fillings, sausage rolls, quiche lorraine, crisps and salad.
We then had fruit salad and jelly for pudding! A few ate my cupcakes too.

We did the baby predictions first and then suggested we have some 'cake'. The penny dropped and people got their cameras and phones out!
Caz and I used a big knife to slice into the cake and then split the cake in half. Pink icing! "I knew it, I knew it" Caz's sister proclaimed! Everyone seemed really happy!

We then played all the various games which turned out great!

The last two were wishes for baby and the bunny baby shower guest book. These were a little more thoughtful and got the emotions going for a few people.

All in all, the party was a great success and we are really pleased with how it turned out.
People commented on the food and how lovely it was and how refreshing the jelly was in this hot weather. People loved the games and the cake and how it was a mixture of fun and thoughtfulness.
I'm pleased with how it turned out. I don't want to host another party for a long time but it was well worth it!
